A union that represents some Montreal Amazon workers said it will petition a court to compel the company to reopen the warehouses and reverse the job cuts.

A protest against the mass layoffs of thousands of people is underway at the Amazon warehouse in Laval Wednesday morning. Protesters are showing their support for the more than 4,600 Quebecers who will be out of work after Amazon announced it was closing seven warehouses in the province.

Amazon's decision to close all seven of its warehouses in the Canadian province of Quebec and terminate more than 1,900 workers is prompting legal action from the affected union.

The union representing the workers at an Amazon warehouse in Laval that is closing – one of seven Quebec Amazon warehouses shutting its doors and laying off all employees – says it’s time to boycott the online retailer.

After Amazon announced it would shutter its Quebec warehouses, costing 1,700 workers their jobs, a Canadian union said it would strike back.

The Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN) is accusing Amazon of closing its Quebec facilities because workers at its Laval, Que., warehouse unionized. The union is now planning legal action against Amazon and asking Quebecers to boycott the company.

A Quebec labour group is urging governments and the public to boycott Amazon because the online retail giant announced the closure of its seven warehouses in the province a few months after workers at one of the facilities voted to unionize.
