A harrowing 911 call, police video and other crime scene evidence are expected to play a key role as the murder and hate crime trial for an Illinois landlord accused of killing a 6-year-old Palestinian American boy continues Wednesday.

Prosecutors have said Joseph Czuba attacked his two tenants, Hanan Shaheen and her 6-year-old son, Wadee Alfayoume, because they were Muslim.

Hanan Shaheen was the first witness called to testify in the trial of Joseph Czuba, the Plainfield landlord charged with attacking her and killing her 6-year-old son, Wadee Al Fayoumi.

Hanan Shaheen was the first witness to give evidence at the murder and hate crime trial of Joseph Czuba, 73. He is charged with wounding Ms Shaheen and killing Wadee Alfayoumi, six, in October 2023.

Joseph Czuba's trial began Monday with the selection of 12 jurors and three alternates. He is accused of killing Wadee Al Fayoumi after becoming radicalized by commentary around the war in Gaza.

A suburban Chicago landlord took a knife from a belt holder and attacked a Palestinian American woman before fatally stabbing her young son 26 times, prosecutors alleged Tuesday during opening statements in the trial for a 2023 murder and hate crime.

Prosecutors say 73-year-old Joseph Czuba attacked a mother and her young son with a knife in the Plainfield home he rented to them in a hate crime motivated by fear just days after the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023.
