A warm, wet storm originating in Hawaii will be pulled north toward California bringing heavy rain and localized flood risk.

The atmospheric river's effects are expected to last at least through Tuesday, one meteorologist told Newsweek.

Weather systems that affect the West Coast of the United States often have their origins in the northern Pacific Ocean. This is because the jet stream usually flows in a general west-to-east fashion.

The current atmospheric river storm will continue to push inland on Sunday, only to be replaced by another storm from Monday into Tuesday, peppering the region with additional rainfall.
