Them! (1954) opens in a scorching New Mexico desert. A young girl, alone and in a state of horrified shock, walks listlessly through the sand - struggling to hold on to her broken baby doll and her sanity. Later in the film, as the traumatized child sits in a waking coma of terror, a scientist holds up a small glass of formic acid to her nose. The odor of the chemical, which is produced by some species of ants, jolts the girl out of her stupor and she begins to scream a single word over and over
