The "Well to Hell," or "Siberian hell sounds," is an urban legend about a borehole in Russia said to reach Hell. This story first appeared in a 1989 broadcast by the Trinity Broadcasting Network. According to the legend, Soviet engineers, led by "Mr Azakov," drilled a 14.4 km (9 miles) deep hole in Siberia. They found a cavity, lowered a microphone, and claimed it recorded screams from a hot chamber. In reality, the Soviet Union drilled the Kola Superdeep Borehole, reaching a depth of over 12 km
